1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 cup cocoa
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup cold water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Combine all ingredients, mixing well. Bake in two greased eight or nine inch cake layer pans in oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit about 30 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

(I just bought a cookbook that was published in 1948 by the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Topeka, KS. The recipes are in the handwriting of the contributors and signed. There are a disconcerting number of recipes for canning. This magazine clipping was inside the book. Love it!)
